A new study found that US border states that legalized marijuana witnessed a huge drop in violent crime. The study: Is Legal Pot Crippling Mexican Drug Trafficking Organizations? The Effect of Medical Marijuana Laws on US Crime. found that:
…among the border states the effect of the change in law was largest in California, where there was a reduction of 15% in violent crime, and weakest in Arizona, where there was a fall of 7%. One of the largest purveyors of cannabis in California, Harborside in Oakland opened at 6am and was soon packed to capacity. Operating as a medical marijuana dispensary for many years, Harborside, along with many other medical dispensaries, have chosen to sell recreational marijuana as well now. The only difference besides needing a medical recommendation for medical cannabis (yes, prop 215 is still in effect), is the price. Uruguay’s Cannabis Legalization a Success!
As the first country in the world to legalize recreational marijuana, Uruguay has progressed and impressed in just five months with it’s liberal cannabis policies.
Uruguay’s ambitious plan allows individuals and clubs to grow cannabis and pharmacies to sell to the 16,000 currently registered users. The government even sponsors a limited number of huge grows that sell to the pharmacies at regulated prices. The goal is to undermine the black market by producing better quality at a lower price.
